Episode 1.04 | “Walkabout”
Not gonna lie, this is by far my favorite Lost episode because it managed to explore the island even further while shedding light on one of the series’ complex characters. I did not know a thing about Mr. Locke first, I think they never even mentioned his name until last episode but I’ve always known that he’s the eventual bad guy.
It should also be noted that the writers spent way too much time thinking about the characters, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. See John Locke is also the name of the English philosopher who postulated that the mind is was a blank slate or tabula rasa (Thanks, Wikipedia!) which ding-ding-ding was the title of last episode!
Oh, Gay-Gay Abrams and his team of writers.
John Locke, the philosopher said that we are born with “innate ideas” and that knowledge is determined by experiences derived from sense perception. Let’s think of the island as every character’s tabula rasa and that Mr. Locke being the hunter that he is somehow decides to live by experiencing the island. Locke is, so far, the only dude who knows things about the island.
Heck, he even saw the monster and never bothered to tell anyone about it!
I’m really impressed with how the flashbacks fit so well within the story. I am aware that in the future, there will be flashforwards and it will fuck my brain up. For now, I’m just happy to know more about Locke.
Also: Jesus Christ, Michael Giacchino’s score is amazing.
